Goals: A Necessary Life Skill

This Month’s Life Skill is “Goals”

All highly successful people agree that it’s important to have and achieve goals throughout one’s life. From a daily checklist to a lifelong project, accomplishing goals no matter their complexity, not only builds our self-confidence, they make our lives more rewarding. The reason, we feel accomplished.

For kids to understand goals and their value, we must make the idea of goal setting relatable. For example, a child’s goals might be to get to the next level of a video game or to ride their bike more. Regardless of how small or insignificant they may seem, achieving their goals activates the brain’s reward center. Regardless if you are five or eighty-five, it feels amazing to achieve a goal; it gives us a sense of purpose and value.

Putting In the Work
Once a child begins to understand that goal setting and obtaining those goals boosts their self-esteem and makes life more enjoyable, they then have one of the tools needed for lifelong success. To help develop this awesome life skill, many of our classroom drills and lessons this month will focus on goal setting and how to achieve them.

The K-South “Goals” Patch
Each student will be asked to write down (or post online) their long-term and short-term goals. Ideally, each student will have six goals, three short-term and three long-term for home, school, and martial arts. At the end of the month, students who accomplished all of the requirements will receive their “Goals” achievement patch for their martial arts uniform.
